“Their gods have failed them,” said Isabel, “These poor natives look to the sky for someone to save them from the arbitrary horrors of this world.” Isabel took the beef jerky from Max. She tore it open and stuffed a piece in her mouth. She made devil eyes over a wicked smile. “They got us instead.”

The Extraterrestrial Highway is officially known on maps as Nevada State Route 375. 375 is the back door to Area 51. And on that highway is the town of Rachel, population 54. A mile or two past Rachel is an abandoned gas station. One mile beyond that gas station is the Black Mailbox. Nobody knows who put it there. Some say it first appeared around 1949 some time after the Roswell incident. Legend has it that at time it bore the name of a Steve Medlin. Who was he? No one knows. The Black Mailbox an artifact of sorts, it’s been hijacked by vandals, painted white then black again, blown to pieces with shotguns. But it always reappears. And when it is there it’s the destination of offerings from those who make the pilgrimage to touch the Black Box in the desert.UFO hunters have reported a Black GMC Denali that appears on moonless nights. A lone driver gets out and collects the contents. Those who attempt to intervene find themselves waking in their cars with no memory of that night. No cell phone videos, no photos, no text messages. The only evidence of being there, a red pin dropped on a Google map that lead them to this place. This is the story of the people who drive the Black Denali.

During the days of covid Virginia and I decided to go take a look at the gateway to Area 51.  It turned out to be a very interesting trip.  We drove to Las Vegas and stayed at some dump on Fremont. The next day we drove out to Rachel.
What struck me was the number of alien shops and places of interest.  The best of the lot was the Lil Alien Inn.  I asked the guy where the black mailbox was. The pointed down the road.  We went down and there it was.  Full of stuff.
Late we drove up to the gate of Area 51.  It was not very impressive. A chain link fence, a guard shack and the remains of a campfire on our side of the gate.
